What Goes into the Gum You Chew
A stick of Juicy Fruit looks pretty simple, but making it takes a lot of work by
people from all over the world. Most Wrigley gums are made from four things:
Gum Base
Gum base puts the "chew" in chewing gum, binding all the ingredients
together and creating a smooth, soft texture.
Sweeteners
The finest grades of pure, powdered cane and beet sugar sweeten Wrigley's gum.
Corn syrup also helps sweeten the gum and keeps it fresh and flexible.
In sugarfree gum, aspartame, mannitol, and sorbitol replace sugar and corn syrup.
Softeners
Softeners like vegetable oil help blend the ingredients and keep the gum soft and flexible.
Flavorings
The most popular flavors for chewing gum come from mint plants. The oils from these
plants give Wrigley's Spearmint and Doublemint gum their flavors. Flavorings for the
other Wrigley brands, like Juicy Fruit and Big Red, come from a variety of fruit and spices.
