Wrigley and the Environment
Here at Wrigley, we're doing our part to help save the planet, by conserving energy, recycling and reducing the amount of trash we make.
One of our biggest goals is to keep trash from ending up in landfills. That's why:
- Every shipping case we use in the U.S. is made from at least 50% recycled materials
- All our vending machine trays are 100% recycled
- By recycling paper, fiber, wood pallets, and other stuff, our printing plant has reduced waste by 65% - that's 140 truckloads a year!
- In Canada, we've cut the trash going into landfills by an amazing 70% in just 13 years
Our Wrappers
Wrapping and packaging keep Wrigley gum fresh and tasty. Without compromising this freshness, our scientists figured out how to reduce the weight of the outer wrapper on multi-stick packages of gum, and how to narrow the labels on single sticks.
It may not sound like much, but these little changes save nearly half a million pounds of packaging a year!
We're always looking for new ways and new materials that can make our packaging even more environment-friendly.
History of Commitment
The environment has been a Wrigley cause for many years:
- In 1933, the company's second president, Philip K. Wrigley, began printing "Use this wrapper to dispose of gum" on the label of every stick he manufactured. This may have been the first litter prevention campaign in the United States.
- In 1953, Wrigley became a charter member of "Keep America Beautiful," a volunteer environmental group. The company is still involved with this national public service effort and with its younger affiliate, "Keep Chicago Beautiful."
- In 1990, our company was the first in Chicago to reward its workers for taking buses and trains to work instead of driving their cars.
